How to Choose a Bathroom Mat?

If you have ever slipped in your bathroom, you probably do not own bathroom matting. We often place bathing mats near doors, or just outside the shower to dry our feet, when we step out from the shower. Bathroom rugs could also act as a decorative element in the bathroom. You could get a multi-colored door mat for bathroom, or place two or three different colored shower mats within the space. Contrast the bathroom matting with folded towels, bathroom tiles, and the walls. Mix and match these elements to curate your stylish bathroom space. If you do not own a bath mat for tub, then you are certainly missing out.

Why do we Need Bath Mats?

Bathing mats are mats that absorb water. Bath mats are placed in front of the tub or shower so that one can dry their feet and avoid wetting the entire bathroom floor. It also considerably reduces your chances of slipping on a wet bathroom floor. The sole purpose of bathroom matting to create a safe and dry bathroom floor.

If water accumulates on the floor, it may become a breeding ground for mold, mildew, bacteria, and viruses. The bathroom mats prevent green moss from infesting in between the tiles. If you have wooden floors, bathroom mats would be very beneficial for they would protect them from water damage. The thicker versions of these water-absorbent mats are known as bathroom rugs. The purpose and value of bathroom mats and bathroom rugs often overlap, depending on their material and size (more on this later!).

How to Choose the Perfect Bath Mats?

A standard door mat for bathroom is around 20 x 30 inches. The ones measuring 17 x 24 inches are suitable to be kept outside the shower and pedestal sinks, while a 21 x 34 inches bath mat would be most suitable for tubs. If your bathroom mat is too small, you might slip on that. A large bathroom rug may look out of place.

Cotton bathroom matting is probably the most popular choice because of cotton’s moisture-wicking, hypoallergenic and anti-microbial properties. They are highly absorbent and dry super quickly. Cotton bathroom mats are also fluffy and soft to touch. Cotton is a sturdy fiber and they make for long-lasting and useful bath mats for tubs. Egyptian cotton takes it up a notch. They are more absorbent than ordinary cotton. Another material called microfibers are also used in making bathroom mats. You could add an extra layer of memory foam cushioning to add support.

However, the top choice for bathroom mats or for any textile of that matter, is organic cotton. The cotton is sourced from fair trade mills and has been GOTS Certified. Organic Cotton especially the one used to prepare Amouve Organic Bed and Bath Products’ bedding products are hypoallergenic and anti-microbial. They are made from naturally-occurring, long-staple, sturdy Kapok fibres. Organic cotton bathroom mats are the most luxurious bathroom matting you could ever own. They are worth every penny, as they are not only the best choice for your skin, long-lasting, but are also better for the environment.

Bath Mats vs Bath Rugs

Bathroom mats are thinner than rugs. As bath rugs are often used as decorative elements, they are not very absorbent. However, they are bigger and make the space look beautiful. You could place two or three bathroom mats inside the bathroom and a big, bathroom rug outside the door.

How to Wash Bath Mats

There is no such special procedure to wash bathroom mats. Try to use a mild detergent while washing bathroom mats. It will make the material last longer. If you are in no hurry, tumble  the bathroom mat in open sunlight. If you are putting it in a dryer, make sure that it is on the lowest setting. Next time, you step out of the shower, if you see that your bathroom mat is dirty, throw it in for a wash. Give it the care it deserves!
